Want to know something about mulberries? A Babylonian myth, which was worked into Ovid’s Metamorphoses, says that the colour of the mulberry fruit was thanks to the lovers Pyramus and Thisbe, who met and, rather tragically, died under a mulberry tree. Figs, on the other hand, along with the fig tree, have been closely linked with female sexuality throughout history and folklore. The distillers at Old Young’s weren’t aiming for the lofty heights of folklore and creation myths; they just thought that these two fruits which worked so well in pies, pastries and jams, could also make a good contribution to the (earthly) spirit world.
